Sandpaper Letters are a tactile approach used in many Montessori schools to teach children how to write the English alphabet. SWR Lowercase Cursive Sandpaper Letters were created by sandpaperletters.com with the help of Wanda Sanseri, author of Spell to Write to Read (SWR).

SWR Cursive Sandpaper Letters have guidelines showing the baseline, a dotted midline and solid top line. All letters have a starting point at the base line, a red stopping point at 2 o'clock and connectors to further the understanding of the proper way to write the English alphabet in cursive. The 27 Cursive Sandpaper Letters are mounted on sturdy white painted pine and come in two colors with blue for vowels and green for consonants. The "Y" comes in both blue and green because it acts as both a consonant and a vowel. The boards are made from sturdy fiberboard with wood chips bonded by resin. Maybe it is the resin but these letters also have that nice pine smell. My kids often pick them up and take a big "sniff" that somehow takes them back to their favorite pine forest!

We love the SWR Cursive Sandpaper Letters. My youngest girl just turned 4 and can write nearly all the letters--large motor with these sand letters. The red stop sign at "two o' clock" is great. She understands to stop there and go back! It is so cute. She picked up an "F" to trace and before she started said in a cute little squeaky voice, "This is a tricky one." She then traced it with her finger perfectly!

The other day I played Phonogram Bingo with my two youngest girls aged 4 and 6. They each had two cards. One extra bingo card for each of their dolls.

After the game they got out the SWR Cursive Sandpaper Letters and were holding their doll's hands, helping them write the letters in the correct direction. What little mothers!! I thought that was quite darling! :)
